We stayed at Jian Guo Garden Hotel (also listed as Jianguo Garden Hotel Beijing) in Beijing’s Dongcheng District with our 6-year-old, and it turned out to be one of the easier hotel decisions of our China trip.

The hotel gave us a central base for exploring Beijing, with convenient access to Wangfujing, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City area. It was also easy for our drivers to find, including the driver who picked us up for our overnight Great Wall trip.

But what did we actually think of the hotel?

Here’s our firsthand Jian Guo Garden Hotel review, including the location, rooms, swimming pool, breakfast, staff, ATM and the little things we’d want to know before booking again.

Is Jian Guo Garden Hotel Worth Staying At?

For us, yes — especially as a family traveling with a child.

The swimming pool was a highlight for our daughter, breakfast gave us plenty of choices, the location worked well for sightseeing, and the staff helped us arrange transportation when we needed it.

It isn’t the hotel we’d choose specifically for a new, design-forward or boutique experience. But as a comfortable and practical home base for exploring Beijing, it worked very well for us.

Would we stay again? Yes.

Jianguo Garden Hotel Location: Is It Good for Sightseeing?

Location was one of the hotel’s biggest advantages for us.

Jianguo Garden Hotel is in Beijing’s Dongcheng District, in the central part of the city. Booking.com currently describes it as a city-center property and lists Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City among the nearby attractions.

For us, the advantage wasn’t simply being close to one attraction. It was having a convenient base for several of the places we wanted to see.

Beijing is enormous. After a full sightseeing day with a 6-year-old, we appreciated not making our hotel logistics more complicated than necessary.

The location also worked well when we used private transportation. Our drivers could find the hotel, and the front desk helped us arrange rides when we needed them.

Our Great Wall Driver Picked Us Up Here

The hotel also became the starting point for one of the best parts of our China trip.

Our driver picked us up directly from Jianguo Garden Hotel for our 2-day Great Wall camping trip.

We hiked Jinshanling, slept overnight inside a watchtower at Gubeikou, then visited Mutianyu the following morning.

Not having to find an unfamiliar meeting point early in the morning was another small reason the hotel worked well for us.

Our Room

Our room was clean, comfortable and perfectly adequate for our family.

The style felt more traditional than modern or boutique, but that didn’t bother us. We weren’t in Beijing to spend most of the day inside the hotel.

After long days sightseeing, we wanted somewhere comfortable to shower, sleep and get ready for the next day.

That’s exactly what our room gave us.

Booking.com currently lists family rooms, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning and private bathrooms among the property’s accommodations and amenities.

The Swimming Pool: Our Daughter’s Favorite Part

The pool ended up being one of the best parts of Jianguo Garden Hotel for our daughter.

Our 6-year-old is a new swimmer, and after spending a day sightseeing around Beijing, being able to come back and swim gave her something completely different to do.

It made a noticeable difference to the trip.

Adults might choose a hotel because of its location.

Kids remember the pool.

Booking.com currently lists two swimming pools among the hotel’s amenities, along with spa and wellness facilities.

We personally used the pool, so that’s the part we can speak to firsthand.

If you’re searching for a family hotel in Beijing with a pool, this is one of the strongest reasons we’d consider staying at Jianguo Garden again.

Tip: If you’re booking specifically for the pool, check its current hours, access requirements and any maintenance closures before your stay.

Breakfast

Breakfast had plenty of variety, which worked particularly well for us traveling with a child.

There were enough choices to put together a full breakfast and find something familiar when we wanted it.

That was especially convenient before long sightseeing days. We could eat at the hotel and head out rather than immediately having to figure out breakfast somewhere else.

For our family, it did what a good hotel breakfast should do:

Everyone found something to eat, and we started the day fed.

Booking.com also currently lists an on-site restaurant serving Chinese and international cuisine, along with a bar and coffee shop.

The hotel actually offers more than we personally used.

• Facilities for disabled guests
• 24-hour front desk
• Bar

The listing also mentions massage services, a hot tub, garden, restaurant, coffee shop and pool bar.

Important: We didn’t personally use every facility on this list.

The pool, breakfast, front-desk assistance and ATM are among the things we actually experienced and can comment on ourselves. For everything else, check the property’s current listing before booking because hotel amenities and availability can change.

Staff and Service: Genuinely Helpful

The staff stood out, especially when it came to helping us arrange transportation.

Getting around a huge city in another country creates little logistical challenges, and having front desk staff willing to help with rides removed some of that friction.

It sounds like a small thing until you’re jet-lagged, traveling with a child and trying to figure out how to get somewhere when almost everything is in Chinese.

Those are the moments when helpful hotel staff actually matter.

Booking.com currently lists a 24-hour front desk, but our opinion of the staff comes from our own experience: they were helpful when we needed them.

Does Jianguo Garden Hotel Have an ATM?

There was an ATM inside the hotel during our stay, and we ended up using it.

This became far more useful than we expected.

Instead of hunting for a bank or ATM somewhere in Beijing, we could withdraw cash without leaving the hotel.

That became particularly helpful because our Alipay stopped working after we arrived in China.

For the first few days, we used our Wise card to withdraw RMB and paid cash until we got WeChat Pay working.

Wise was useful as an international travel backup because it gave us another way to access money while traveling, along with its multi-currency features.

Tip: The ATM was there when we stayed, but I wouldn’t rely on any hotel ATM as your only way to access cash.

One Bathroom Detail From Our Stay

There’s one thing we’d rather know before checking in.

During our stay, we were instructed not to flush toilet paper and to use the bathroom bin instead.

It was a small adjustment once we knew what to do.

Rather than assuming the same rule applies everywhere in Beijing or China, check the instructions in your room or ask the front desk, since plumbing practices can vary by property and building.

Not a reason we wouldn’t stay again — just something useful to know.

Who Is Jianguo Garden Hotel Good For?

Based on our stay, we’d especially consider it for:

• Families with kids, particularly if swimming matters
• First-time Beijing visitors wanting a central base
• Travelers wanting to stay in Dongcheng District
• Visitors sightseeing around Wangfujing, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City
• Travelers who appreciate staff assistance with transportation
• People using private drivers or tours offering hotel pickup
• Travelers looking for a Beijing hotel with a pool
• Travelers who would use spa or fitness facilities

For our family, the combination of location + pool + breakfast + helpful staff mattered much more than trendy hotel design.

Who Might Want to Stay Somewhere Else?

I’d compare other hotels if you’re:

• Looking for a new, design-forward luxury hotel
• Wanting a traditional Beijing courtyard or hutong experience
• Traveling on a strict budget and don’t need the extra facilities
• Looking for a hotel where the room itself is a major part of the vacation
• Loyal to a particular international hotel program

And that last point is important.

Before booking Jianguo Garden, compare the rate with a few other hotels around Wangfujing and the Forbidden City.

Sometimes an international luxury or chain hotel may be close enough in price to make it worth considering.

Jian Guo Garden worked for us as a practical, comfortable Beijing base. But it’s worth comparing a few nearby hotels before booking, especially because hotel rates can vary substantially by date.

Other Hotels Near the Forbidden City & Wangfujing

If Jianguo Garden Hotel isn’t available or you want to compare before booking, there are several well-rated alternatives around Wangfujing and the Forbidden City. Renaissance Beijing Wangfujing and Hilton Beijing Wangfujing are worth considering if you prefer a familiar international hotel with more upscale amenities, while The Peninsula Beijing and Waldorf Astoria Beijing are higher-end options if you’re looking for a luxury stay.

We didn’t stay at these hotels, so they’re alternatives to compare rather than personal recommendations. For our family, we’d happily stay at Jianguo Garden again because we know the location, pool, breakfast and staff worked well for us. But hotel prices in Beijing can vary by date, so it’s worth checking the map below to compare locations, current rates and availability before deciding.

The Bottom Line: Would We Book Jianguo Garden Hotel Again?

Yes.

Jianguo Garden Hotel wasn’t the flashiest hotel we could have chosen in Beijing.

It didn’t need to be.

After long sightseeing days, we could come back to a comfortable room, our daughter could swim, we could eat breakfast the next morning, the staff could help us with transportation, and our drivers could easily pick us up.

Even the ATM ended up being useful when our original China payment plan fell apart.

For our family, Jianguo Garden Hotel was a comfortable, practical and conveniently located Beijing base.

We’d stay there again.
