Visiting the Taj Mahal from Delhi: Day Trip Guide & Tickets (2026)

Updated: August 2026
Quick Answer: The Taj Mahal is in Agra, about 230 km (143 miles) from Delhi. By car, the trip usually takes around 3โ4 hours each way, making it possible to visit the Taj Mahal from Delhi in one day. Plan about 10โ12 hours for the full day trip and 2โ3 hours at the Taj Mahal itself. October through March generally has the most comfortable weather, and an early-morning visit is best for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.
What's In This Article?
Visiting the Taj Mahal from Delhi is one of the easiest ways to add this iconic landmark to a Delhi itinerary. The Taj Mahal is about 3โ4 hours away by car, so you don’t necessarily need to stay overnight in Agra to see it.
We took this trip as a private tour. For us, having transportation and a guide already arranged made the long day much easier, especially since we didn’t have to figure out transportation once we reached Agra.
But a private tour isn’t the only option. You can also travel from Delhi to Agra by train or hire a private driver without booking a full guided tour.
Below, I’ll cover what our private tour was like, current Taj Mahal ticket prices, how long you need, the best time to visit, transportation options, and what to know before you go.

Why Choose a Taj Mahal Private Tour from Delhi?
We chose a private tour because it was the simplest way to make the Delhi to Taj Mahal day trip without coordinating multiple transfers.
The biggest advantage was door-to-door transportation. We could leave directly from Delhi, travel in an air-conditioned vehicle, visit the Taj Mahal with a guide, and return to Delhi afterward.
Having a guide also gave us more context about the history and architecture of the Taj Mahal, including some of the stories and legends associated with it.
A private tour can be especially convenient if you’re traveling with kids, visiting India for the first time, or have limited time in Delhi.
Another benefit is flexibility. Unlike a large group tour, you have more control over how much time you spend taking photos, walking around the gardens, or listening to your guide.

What to Expect on a Taj Mahal Private Tour from Delhi
A Taj Mahal day trip from Delhi usually takes most of the day. Plan approximately 10โ12 hours from departure to return, depending on traffic and whether you add another stop in Agra.
A typical itinerary looks something like this:
- Early Pick-Up: Leave Delhi early in the morning to get ahead of traffic and reach Agra earlier.
- Drive to Agra: The journey generally takes around 3โ4 hours by road.
- Taj Mahal Visit: Allow approximately 2โ3 hours to explore the Taj Mahal, gardens, and main mausoleum if you purchase the additional ticket.
- Optional Extra Stop: If time allows, some tours combine the Taj Mahal with Agra Fort or Mehtab Bagh.
- Lunch: Depending on the package, lunch may be included or offered as an optional extra.
- Return to Delhi: Drive back after your visit.
During our trip, the drive was comfortable and didn’t feel as difficult as I expected for a day trip of this length.
Having our own vehicle also meant we weren’t waiting for an entire tour group every time we were ready to move on.
Optional Tea Stop: Along the way, your tour may include a quick stop at a tea shop for a tasting. We stopped at one where chai tea was served in small, one-time-use clay cups โ a fun little experience we weren’t expecting on our way to the Taj Mahal.

Taj Mahal Entry Ticket Prices
Taj Mahal admission is important to check before booking a tour because entrance tickets are not included in every tour package.
Current official admission prices are:
| Ticket Type | Price |
| Foreign tourist | โน1,100 |
| SAARC/BIMSTEC citizen | โน540 |
| Indian / OCI visitor | โน50 |
| Main mausoleum add-on | โน200 additional |
| Children under 15 | Free general admission |
The additional โน200 mausoleum ticket is required if you want to enter the main mausoleum.
Prices current as of August 2026 โ verify the latest admission fees on the official ASI Taj Mahal ticket page before you go, since government pricing can change without notice.
If you are comparing private tours, don’t look at the advertised price alone. Check whether the package includes:
- Taj Mahal admission
- Mausoleum admission
- Agra Fort admission
- Private guide
- Hotel pickup and drop-off
- Lunch
- Private vehicle
A cheaper-looking tour can end up costing more once the extras are added.
Tip: Ticket prices and rules can change, so verify the latest admission information before your visit.
Best Time to Visit the Taj Mahal
The best months to visit the Taj Mahal are generally October through March, when northern India has cooler temperatures.
These are also popular travel months, so cooler weather doesn’t necessarily mean smaller crowds.
Best Time of Day
If possible, visit early in the morning.
An early visit gives you cooler temperatures, better light for photography, and a chance to see the Taj Mahal before some of the larger tour groups arrive.
The Taj Mahal opens 30 minutes before sunrise and closes 30 minutes before sunset on normal operating days, so the exact opening time varies during the year.
The Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors every Friday.
That is an important detail when planning a short Delhi itinerary. Don’t schedule your only available Taj Mahal day for a Friday.
We left Delhi early, which also gave us more time at the Taj Mahal instead of spending the entire day focused only on getting there and back.

How Much Time Do You Need at the Taj Mahal?
Plan approximately 2โ3 hours at the Taj Mahal.
Two hours can be enough if you mainly want to walk through the gardens, see the main viewpoints, take photos, and visit the monument.
Allow closer to three hours if you want to:
- Take your time with photography
- Enter the main mausoleum
- Listen to a detailed guided explanation
- Explore the grounds without rushing
- Visit with children at a slower pace
The Taj Mahal is the reason most people make the trip to Agra, so I wouldn’t rush through it just to squeeze another attraction into the itinerary.
Taj Mahal Private Tour Prices from Delhi
There isn’t one standard price for a private Taj Mahal tour from Delhi.
The cost depends on your group size, vehicle, guide, pickup location, monument tickets, meals, and the tour package you select.
This is also why you’ll see a wide range of prices when searching online.
When comparing tours, look at the total package, not just the lowest advertised starting price.
| Provider | What to Compare | Booking |
| Viator | Private car, guide, admission and lunch options | Check Price & Availability โ |
| GetYourGuide | Private and guided Delhi-to-Taj Mahal tour options | Compare Tours โ |
Prices change depending on the date and package, so I prefer linking to the live prices rather than giving you a number that may already be outdated when you book.
How to Book Your Taj Mahal Tour
You can compare Taj Mahal tours from Delhi through your preferred tour-booking platform like Viator or GetYourGuide.
Before booking, check:
- Is the tour private or shared?
- Is hotel pickup included?
- Are Taj Mahal tickets included?
- Is the โน200 mausoleum ticket included?
- Are any optional Agra stops included?
- Is lunch included?
- Is the guide private?
- What type of vehicle is provided?
- Is the return trip to Delhi included?
Those details matter more than simply choosing the cheapest listing.
Our tour included lunch, and the food was good at the place we chose.

Other Ways to Get from Delhi to the Taj Mahal
You don’t have to take a guided tour. Here are the main ways to get from Delhi to Agra and the Taj Mahal, from the most convenient to the most independent.
1. Private Tour
Best for: Convenience, families and first-time visitors.
You get door-to-door transportation and, depending on the package, a guide, tickets and lunch. This was the option we chose.
2. Train from Delhi to Agra
Best for: Independent travelers who want a faster journey between the two cities.
Fast trains between Delhi and Agra can make the rail journey considerably shorter than driving.
The important thing to remember is that the train only gets you to Agra. You’ll still need transportation from your Delhi hotel to the railway station, from Agra Cantt station to the Taj Mahal, and back to the station for your return train.
3. Private Driver or Taxi
Best for: Travelers who want private transportation but don’t necessarily need a guide.
The drive generally follows the Yamuna Expressway and takes roughly three to four hours under normal conditions.
You get the convenience of your own vehicle, but you’ll handle your own Taj Mahal tickets and sightseeing once you reach Agra.
4. Group Bus Tour
Best for: Travelers prioritizing price.
Group tours are typically more budget-friendly, but you’ll have less control over departure times, sightseeing pace, meals, and stops. They’re a good option if keeping costs down is your priority.
| Option | Best For | Main Advantage | Main Drawback |
| Private tour | Families/first-time visitors | Door-to-door convenience | Usually costs more |
| Train | Independent travelers | Fast city-to-city journey | Requires transfers |
| Private driver | Flexible travelers | Private transportation | Guide not necessarily included |
| Group tour | Budget travelers | Lower cost | Least flexibility |
For us, the convenience of a private tour was worth it. If I were traveling independently and trying to keep costs as low as possible, I would compare train schedules before deciding.
Can You Visit Other Agra Attractions on the Same Day?
Yes. If you have extra time, many Taj Mahal day tours from Delhi include another stop in Agra.
Agra Fort is the easiest major attraction to combine with the Taj Mahal and is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some tours also stop at Mehtab Bagh, across the Yamuna River from the Taj Mahal.
I wouldn’t try to fit too much into the day. The Taj Mahal should be the priority, especially when you’re also traveling several hours each way from Delhi.

Taj Mahal Tips Before You Go
Don’t Go on Friday
The Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors every Friday. If you’re only in Delhi for a few days, build your itinerary around this first.
Leave Delhi Early
An early departure gives you more time at the Taj Mahal and helps you arrive before the hottest and busiest part of the day.
Check What’s Included in Your Tour
Don’t assume an advertised Taj Mahal tour price includes entrance tickets. Check the inclusions before paying.
Pack Light
Security screening is required to enter the Taj Mahal, and bringing unnecessary items can slow you down.
Bring Identification
Keep your passport or appropriate government-issued identification with you.
Don’t Bring a Drone
Drone cameras are prohibited around the Taj Mahal.
Decide Whether You Want to Enter the Mausoleum
General admission and mausoleum admission are separate. If you want to go inside the main mausoleum, make sure you have the additional ticket.
Visiting the Taj Mahal with Kids
If you’re visiting the Taj Mahal from Delhi with kids, keep in mind that this is a long day.
For families, I prefer the flexibility of a private car over a large group tour. You have more control over:
- Bathroom stops
- Meal times
- How long you stay
- When you leave
- Breaks when your child needs one
An early departure also helps because you’ll reach the Taj Mahal before the hottest part of the day.
Children under 15 currently receive free general admission to the Taj Mahal.
Where to Stay in Delhi
If you’re taking an early-morning tour to the Taj Mahal, staying somewhere convenient for pickup can make the start of the day much easier.

Final Thoughts: Is a Taj Mahal Day Trip from Delhi Worth It?
Yes. The journey makes for a long day, but you can comfortably visit the Taj Mahal from Delhi without staying overnight in Agra.
We chose a private tour because we wanted the transportation and sightseeing logistics handled for us. It allowed us to concentrate on the Taj Mahal instead of figuring out how to get around Agra.
If convenience is your priority, a private tour is probably the easiest option. If you’re comfortable traveling independently and want to reduce costs, compare train tickets and arrange your own transportation from Agra station to the Taj Mahal.
Whichever option you choose, the biggest things to remember are simple: don’t go on Friday, leave Delhi early, allow at least 2โ3 hours at the Taj Mahal, and check exactly what’s included before booking a tour.
