Delhi and Agra in 2 Days: A Firsthand Itinerary

Taj Mahal Entrance In Agra, India

Two full days gave us enough time to take a day trip from Delhi to the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, then spend our second day exploring Old and New Delhi. We did it in late October with our daughter, who was 4, on our short first trip to India.

We stayed in Delhi, used private drivers and guides for both sightseeing days, and flew out after midnight on the second night. It was a packed schedule, but the transportation setup made it work.

If you’re wondering whether two days is enough for Delhi and Agra, here’s exactly how we split it and what we’d tell you before booking. Our Delhi Agra 2 day itinerary gave us one full day in Agra and another exploring Old and New Delhi.

Arrival: Delhi

We arrived at Indira Gandhi International Airport at night and went straight to our hotel. We’d flown in from the Philippines via Thailand using a mix of Chase and Amex points.

Our Agra tour started the following morning, so we didn’t plan anything else for arrival night.

Hotel location matters on a trip this short. Delhi traffic can eat up a lot of time, especially when you’re planning an early pickup for Agra and a late flight home.

Where We Based Ourselves

We stayed in Delhi both nights instead of changing hotels. Our hotel was the Aerocity, next to the airport, and we booked it with Chase Ultimate Rewards points transferred to World of Hyatt.

That worked well with our itinerary because our Agra driver could pick us up from the hotel and return us there that evening. The next morning, our Delhi driver and guide picked us up from the same place, and on our final day, the hotel held our luggage until we finished sightseeing.

Day 1: Delhi to Agra and Back

Our first full day was a private day trip from Delhi to Agra. Our driver picked us up at the hotel, a guide joined us in Agra, and entry fees were included. Delhi to Agra is about 200–230 kilometers by road, roughly three to four hours each way on the Yamuna Expressway, depending on Delhi traffic.

Our Day 1 route:

Delhi → Taj Mahal → lunch → marble inlay workshop → leather shop → Agra Fort → Delhi

We stopped for chai along the way, served in a tiny disposable clay cup, and our daughter dozed off some in the car.

At the Taj Mahal, we walked the grounds with our guide. For some visitors, our 4-year-old was the attraction. A group of high school girls had so much fun with her, taking pictures with her and taking turns carrying her around in her princess dress.

After lunch, we watched artisans at a marble inlay workshop use the same pietra dura technique that decorates the Taj Mahal, then stopped at a leather shop, since Agra is known for its leather. We came home with a light-up inlaid marble table (shipped, and it arrived four to six weeks later), a marble mug, leather bags and a belt. The shops gave our daughter a little marble elephant and a pair of leather boots.

We finished at Agra Fort, then drove back to Delhi through heavy traffic. Our driver stayed patient the whole way, and we gave him a generous tip.

Our tip for the Agra day: Plan on a long day. Between the drive, the sightseeing and the shopping stops, it filled our whole day.

For each stop in more detail, see our one-day Agra itinerary. For tickets and transportation, read our guide to visiting the Taj Mahal from Delhi.

Day 2: Old and New Delhi

Our second day was a private tour of Old and New Delhi with a different driver and guide, who picked us up at the hotel. Entry fees were included, and since our flight wasn’t until 1 a.m., we had the whole day.

Our Day 2 route:

Delhi Chalo Park and Red Fort (brief stop) → Jama Masjid → bicycle rickshaw → Khari Baoli → carpet shop → Raj Ghat → Agrasen Ki Baoli → Humayun’s Tomb → India Gate → Lotus Temple

Bicycle Rickshaw Traveling Through Old Delhi

The bicycle rickshaw through Old Delhi was one of the most memorable parts of the day. We were right in the middle of the traffic and crowded streets as our driver pedaled toward the spice market, and our daughter was totally feeling the ride. At Agrasen Ki Baoli, she loved the stairs.

Humayun’s Tomb was another standout for me. I actually liked it more than the Taj Mahal. If you’re short on time in Delhi, don’t skip it.

We reached the Lotus Temple too late to go inside, so we saw and photographed it from outside. If going inside matters to you, put it earlier in your day.

Our tip for the Delhi day: Wear shoes that are easy to slip on and off. Jama Masjid and Raj Ghat both had us removing them.

For our complete route, what we experienced at each stop and how we fit it all into one day, read our one-day Delhi itinerary.

Back to the Hotel and Delhi Airport

Our driver returned us to the hotel after sightseeing. We collected our bags and headed to Indira Gandhi International Airport, arriving around 9 p.m. for our 1 a.m. flight. With a flight that late, we basically spent the night at the airport.

Can You See Delhi and Agra in 2 Days?

Yes, if you’re fine with two long sightseeing days. Having a driver and guide both days is what made it doable for us with a 4-year-old.

Our Private Tours

For such a short trip, the biggest advantage for us was having transportation already waiting between stops. Our drivers handled the traffic and pickup points while the guides took us through the attractions. We’d use the same setup again.

One thing to know: tours like these will bring you to shops, like the marble, leather and carpet stops on ours. For us, those stops fell into “we’re already here, we might as well.” That’s how we came home with a runner rug and stone-inlaid table for my daughter from Delhi.

India Visa

U.S. travelers need the appropriate authorization to enter India. India currently offers eligible travelers e-Tourist Visas with 30-day, one-year and five-year options. You apply online, upload your passport and photo details, pay the fee and receive the Electronic Travel Authorization by email. Eligible tourist applicants can apply a minimum of four days before arrival.

Since April 1, 2026, foreign nationals also have to submit a free e-Arrival Card online within 72 hours before arriving. It wasn’t required yet when we went. Families of up to five can submit a single form.

We used the official India e-Visa website for our trip and found the process straightforward.

Our 2-Day Delhi and Agra Itinerary

We saw both cities and still made our flight that night. Our daughter enjoyed the Taj Mahal most.

With the same amount of time, I’d follow this route again.
