Hamilton Pool Preserve Reservations: Fees, Swimming Rules and What to Expect

Hamilton Pool Preserve is one of the most beautiful places I’ve visited in the Texas Hill Country. A waterfall spills over a limestone cliff into a green pool, surrounded by a dramatic grotto and lush vegetation.
I’ve visited three times: first on my own, then with my parents, and later with my sister. Every time, the best moment was the view that opens up as you walk down the trail toward the water.
You’ll need a Hamilton Pool Preserve reservation and cash for the entrance fee, and swimming isn’t always open.
Here’s how to book Hamilton Pool Preserve and what to know before you go.
Do You Need a Reservation for Hamilton Pool Preserve?
Yes. Hamilton Pool Preserve requires reservations every day of the year. The online reservation costs $12 per vehicle for up to eight people. You’ll also pay a separate entrance fee in cash when you arrive: $8 per adult, $3 per senior and free admission for children 12 and younger.
There are two reservation periods: 9 AM–12:30 PM and 2–5:30 PM. Swimming isn’t guaranteed, even with a confirmed reservation.
Book through the official Travis County Parks reservation page.

How to Make a Hamilton Pool Preserve Reservation
Reservations are handled online through Travis County Parks.
- Go to the Hamilton Pool Preserve page on the Travis County Parks website.
- Open the Hamilton Pool reservation system.
- Choose your date.
- Select the morning or afternoon reservation period.
- Enter the visitor and vehicle information.
- Pay the $12 reservation fee online.
- Save your confirmation email for check-in.
Each reservation covers one vehicle and up to eight people. Additional vehicles or larger groups need additional reservations.
Up to two people can be named on a reservation, and at least one of them must be there with photo ID. You can show your confirmation on your phone or bring a printed copy.

How Far in Advance Should You Book?
I’d check availability as soon as you know your travel date, especially for weekends and holidays.
Travis County releases dates in batches, and the reservation page shows which ones are open. As of October 2026, reservations are open through November 2026.
Can You Visit Hamilton Pool Without a Reservation?
No. You need a reservation even if you only want to see the waterfall and aren’t planning to swim.
Hamilton Pool Preserve Reservation and Entrance Fees
You’ll pay twice: once online when you book and again at the entrance.
| Fee | Cost | When to Pay |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle reservation | $12 per vehicle, up to 8 people | Online when booking |
| Adults ages 13–61 | $8 per person | Cash at entrance |
| Seniors ages 62+ | $3 per person | Cash at entrance |
| Children ages 12 and under | Free | No entrance fee |
For example, two adults visiting in one vehicle would pay $28 total: $12 for the reservation and $16 in entrance fees.
The entrance booth takes cash only, and all fees are nonrefundable.

Can You Cancel or Reschedule?
You can reschedule online, subject to availability, until midnight before your reservation date. Same-day changes aren’t allowed.
Hamilton Pool Preserve Hours and Time Slots
Hamilton Pool has two daily reservation periods.
| Reservation Period | Visiting Hours | Exit Deadline |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | 9 AM–12:30 PM | 1 PM |
| Afternoon | 2–5:30 PM | 6 PM |
You’ll need to finish swimming and hiking by the end of your reservation period and leave by the exit time.
I booked the afternoon slot, and it wasn’t very crowded. Whichever you choose, I’d arrive near the start of your time slot so you have time to walk down to the pool, take photos and enjoy the setting.

Can You Swim at Hamilton Pool Preserve?
Swimming depends on conditions. Travis County may close the water because of bacteria levels, recent rain or other safety concerns.
As of October 2026, limited water access is allowed from the beach. Only a small part of the pool is open because of falling-rock hazards, and the trail under the overhanging cliff is closed, so you can’t walk around the pool or underneath the waterfall.
A reservation never guarantees swimming.
When I visited a few years ago, I swam in the pool and remember how cool the water felt. With today’s restrictions, your visit may look different.
Before you leave, check the official Hamilton Pool swimming status or call 512-854-2581. The recorded update is posted daily by 8:30 AM.
There are no lifeguards. Life vests are provided, while supplies last, when swimming is open.
What to Expect When Visiting Hamilton Pool Preserve
The Walk Down to the Pool
The trail from the parking area to the pool is about a quarter mile, and it’s steep, narrow and rugged, with uneven steps and rocky ground. Travis County estimates about 30 minutes for the round trip.
On my visits, the walk down was part of the experience. The grotto and pool come into view gradually as you descend into the canyon.
Wear sturdy shoes with good traction, since you’ll climb back uphill to the parking area. If you’re bringing young kids, plan for that climb back up. Little ones may need a hand on the uneven steps.
The Waterfall and Limestone Grotto
Hamilton Pool formed over thousands of years as erosion caused part of a limestone grotto to collapse.
Today, Hamilton Creek flows over the cliff and drops about 50 feet into the pool below. The flow varies with rainfall, and the grotto is impressive even when the waterfall is light.

How Much Time Should You Allow?
I’d plan around 1½–2½ hours for a relaxed visit, including the walk to and from the pool, photos and time to enjoy the scenery.
What to Bring to Hamilton Pool Preserve
The preserve has limited facilities, so bring what you’ll need.
- Drinking water: There’s no drinking water at the preserve.
- Sturdy walking shoes: The trail is steep and uneven.
- Cash: For the per-person entrance fees.
- Reservation confirmation and photo ID: Needed for entry.
- Sun protection: A hat, sunscreen and sunglasses for exposed sections.
- Swimsuit and towel: Only if swimming is open and you plan to get in.
- Camera or phone: For the waterfall and grotto.
There are portable toilets and picnic tables, but no concessions, electricity or running water.
Pets aren’t allowed, not even inside your vehicle.
